Lithuanian ID Card (Lithuanian Electronic ID Card / Identity Card) is a national electronic ID document with an embedded security chip, which can be used to generate a Qualified Electronic Signature (QES) compliant with the eIDAS standard, making the signing act legally valid within the EU.
This identity card is issued and managed by the Migration Department under the Ministry of the Interior of Lithuania. Lithuanian citizens can apply for this card as their national ID document and use it for digital services and electronic signature purposes.
To use this ID card for electronic signatures, the following conditions are usually required to be met:
The electronic signature-related functions of the Lithuanian ID card comply with the eIDAS Regulation (EU Regulation No. 910/2014), and are considered to be included in the EU’s general electronic identification and trust service system. The generated QES is legally binding within the EU member states.
Lithuania’s ID card issuing agency holds the status of Qualified Trust Service Provider (QTSP), and its electronic signature service needs to undergo regular audits and be included in the trust service list.
