SPID

1. Service Introduction

SPID (Sistema Pubblico di Identità Digitale) is Italy’s public digital identity system, managed by AgID. In addition to serving as a unified authentication method for users to log in to public administration and private services, SPID can also be used for workflows involving qualified electronic signatures (QES), including hash-based QES scenarios, making it ideal for remote signing and API integration applications.

SPID operates nationwide in Italy, with identity authentication issued and managed by multiple identity providers (Identity Providers) authorized by the Italian government. 4. Dependency Requirements

Using SPID for signing typically requires:

  • SPID registration account and activation process: Users must have a SPID identity issued by an authorized IdP (Identity Provider);

  • Valid identity documents and tax number (Codice Fiscale): Used for identity verification;

5. Compliance Description

SPID fully complies with eIDAS Regulation (EU) No 910/2014 and is considered a strong authentication electronic signature method in Italy. When used in conjunction with QTSP certificates, it can be used to generate qualified electronic signatures (QES) within the EU, with the same legal effect as handwritten signatures. Learn more
