Latvian ID Card

1. Service Introduction

Latvian ID card (Latvian electronic ID / eID card) is a national electronic ID document used by Latvian citizens and eligible residents, equipped with a secure chip. This document supports the generation of Qualified Electronic Signature (QES) compliant with eIDAS regulations, which is legally valid throughout the EU.

This eID card is issued and managed by Latvia’s “Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs (OCMA)”. In Latvia, all individuals registered in the “Population Register” are eligible to apply for this card.

5. Compliance Description

The Latvian eID card complies with the eIDAS Regulation (Regulation (EU) No 910/2014) and is considered one of the notified electronic identification schemes. It can be used to create Qualified Electronic Signatures (QES) and is recognized as having legal validity within EU member states.

In addition, Latvian law stipulates that from 2021, the eID card will become a mandatory ID document for citizens or non-citizens aged 15 and above. All cardholders can obtain signature and authentication certificates free of charge and use them for an unlimited number of electronic signatures.
