BankID is the most widely used electronic identity verification and electronic signature system in Sweden, supporting users to generate electronic signatures and perform identity authentication on mobile or desktop devices. Users can securely sign contracts, approve transactions, and access confidential information in banks, government agencies, and third-party services through BankID.
BankID is operated by Finansiell ID-Teknik BID AB, a joint venture of several Swedish banks, and its services cover the entire country of Sweden. Almost all mainstream banks and public services in Sweden support BankID as a means of electronic identity and signature.
To use Swedish BankID for signing, the general conditions include:
Swedish Personal Identity Number (personnummer): Must have a Swedish personal identity number to activate BankID.
Bank Customer Relationship: Must be a customer of a bank that supports the issuance of BankID, and the bank is responsible for issuing BankID.
Device and Application: Users need to install the BankID Security App on their mobile devices (iOS / Android) for signature confirmation.
Initial Identity Verification: When applying for BankID, identity confirmation is required through bank counters or other verification methods.
BankID complies with the national electronic identity regulatory framework in Sweden and is certified with the Swedish e-ID quality mark (Trust Level 3). Its signature and identity verification mechanisms are integrated with Sweden’s national trust infrastructure.
According to Swedish law, BankID signatures have legal effect in domestic legal proceedings and are considered advanced electronic signatures (AdES) within the EU under the eIDAS 910/2014 regulation. Their validity should not be rejected in litigation due to their electronic form.
